Which Oldham coupling works in vacuum, cleanroom and high-heat conditions?
The NBK MOP and MOHS Oldham couplings are built for cleanroom, vacuum and high-heat use. Both use the classic three-piece Oldham mechanism with an insulating spacer: MOP has an aluminium hub with a PEEK spacer rated to 120 °C, while MOHS has a stainless-steel hub with a VESPEL spacer rated to 200 °C. They are chemical-proof, electrically insulating, tolerate large shaft misalignment and are supplied clean-washed and clean-packed.
Features
- High allowable shaft misalignment
- Heat resistant (see table)
- Identical clockwise and counter-clockwise characteristics
- Chemical-proof
- Excellent electrical insulation
- Vacuum and cleanroom compatible
- Easy to assemble
Overview
These flexible couplings accommodate parallel and lateral shaft misalignment, reducing reaction forces on bearings and improving reliability. They use a classic three-piece Oldham mechanism of two hubs and a central spacer: a PEEK or VESPEL spacer depending on the model. The couplings are supplied with clean washing and clean packaging.
Working principle
The Oldham coupling connects two shafts while accommodating significant misalignment and minimising bearing load. It has two hubs fitted to each shaft and a central sliding spacer between them; each hub has a tongue-shaped slot, and the spacer has matching slots oriented perpendicularly. As the coupling rotates the spacer slides in these slots, transmitting torque even when shafts are misaligned.
This sliding action absorbs angular and lateral misalignment without large reaction forces on shafts or bearings, reducing mechanical stress and improving system life. The coupling also provides electrical insulation, generates minimal eccentric reaction forces and gives identical clockwise and counter-clockwise performance.
Attachment types
MOP and MOHS are both available as clamping (C) types.
